THE BRAIN
Cranial Nerves
There are twelve pairs of cranial nerves, traditionally referred to both by name and by Roman numeral. Some are involved solely with sensation, some solely with movement and some with both.

The functions of these nerves are as follows:

| Optic | Vision |
| Oculomotor | Movement of the eyelid and eyeball |
| Trochlear | Eye movement |
| Trigeminal | Sensation in the teeth, mouth & skin of face; chewing |
| Abducens | Eye movement |
| Facial | Muscles of facial expression; taste in front 2/3 of tongue; salivation |
| Vestibulocochlear | Balance; hearing |
| Glossophayrngeal | Swallowing; taste in back 1/3 of tongue |
| Vagus | Swallowing; sensory information from neck, chest and abdomen; maintains heart rate and stimulates digestion |
| Accessory | Muscles of the shoulders and neck |
| Hypoglossal | Tongue movement |
